Walt,

I am the family history researcher for the descendents of John McKelvey. John and his wife Josephine had two children - John Henry (b 1860 and Edward (b 1862). It is believe that they bothe went to an Alaska Gold Rush in the 1880. I can't find either in the 1880 US Census. John Henry (my great-great grandfather) came back to the 48 states in 1883 and married his childhood sweetheart.

Ed spent most of his life in Ruby Alaska. He is in the 1920 & 1930 US Census. He move to Fairbanks in the early 1930s, to attain medical care at Fairbanks Hospital. He died in a hotel fire in Fairbanks in 1934 after a lengthy illness.

The family recalls that Ed used to come back to Larchwood, Iowa periodically, to visit his family (his mother and brother). His mother passed away in 1935. Ed is buried in the Fairbanks City Cemetery. I retire in five years and hope to visit Alaska, including Ruby. I've researched Ruby and understand it is very small (about 200 population). Could you advise me on how to get to Ruby (Air?, ship? highwasy?) and where should I stay when I get to Ruby. Probably no hotels, but do people rent rooms by the day or week? If so, how do I contact them?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.
