RESIDENTS of the RUBY, ALASKA Mining District

Including the towns of Ruby, Long and Poorman

From the discovery of gold in 1906 to WW2***

I am attempting to provide genealogy information as well as give recognition to the people who resided, or at least spent some time, in Ruby and the surrounding area during it's early days. So often only the rich, powerful or famous people in our society are remembered. This is my effort to keep some of the Alaskan pioneers from being forgotten. There is a story that goes with each of these names.

In the gold rush days of Alaska some men would come to a new gold camp and become part of the community while others would do some prospecting and if they didn't make a big strike would move on. Thus some of the names on this list are people who may have only spent a short time in the Ruby mining district. Approximately 250 people are listed here because they had an unclaimed letter at the Ruby post office in 1912. Were they out mining on an area creek or had they moved on? In many cases we may never know.

When trying to find more information about an individual on this list I would suggest investigating details from the prior gold rush areas of Iditarod/Flat, Fairbanks or Nome as some prospectors and merchants moved from one gold strike to the next. Many people had been in the north country since the Klondike rush of '98 so a search of the Dawson archives could be productive. A search of members of The Pioneers of Alaska may also reveal information about a person.

If you know of other names, have additional information about these people or have pictures of them your willing to share please email me. My information comes from Census data*, Military draft registration, visiting the Ruby cemetery**, history books, old photos and friends or family of the early residents. This is a work in progress and I welcome any help and information you have to offer. ~ Walt Larson
